May 24, 2005 House Debates stemcellnews.net The one minute pre-debate comments have been given this morning, and already the misinformation flies. Citizens who care about the ethics of their country and the use of their tax dollars are advised to think critically about the arguments proffered today, regardless of their political party. Can we for once choose truth and wisdom over teamism? Representative Holt this claimed that ESCR (embryonic stem cell research) easily falls within the ethical boundaries of the American people. Yet, there are millions of Americans who strongly disagree with ESCR on ethical grounds. Rep. Castle, author of one of the bills to be debated today, claims that 'expert after expert' says that ESCR provides greater potential for healing than NSCR (non-embryonic stem cell research). This may not be a direct lie, but it is worded to mislead. The fact is that many knowledgeable scientists, experienced in stem cell research, have stated that adult, or non-embryonic, research is capable of producing all the cells needed to effect cures, and some of those scientists have actually performed healing operations on human patients using NSCR, such as cells taken from umbilical cords, from bone marrow, and from animals. Furthermore, there is recent clinical evidence that the best (least expensive, most effective, most widely available - virtually everybody) method of providing medical patients with stem cells is to provide back to humans certain micronutrients that have been removed by modern day food growing and processing techniques - unnatural techniques. Some of this new research seems to prove the embryonic cell research is already outdated. If that is true, why take (tax) money out of my/our pockets to fund such nonsense? This new scientific data indicates that even adult stem cell research, while often successful to some degree, will soon take a back seat in the scientific community to the blossoming field of micronutrient-supported stem cell self-generation. |

Missed Opportunities Yield Ignorance stemcellnews.net The broadcasting by C-SPAN of live call-in programs opens doors for us to step outside ourselves into glory or shame. As so often happens, today's discussion (Monday, June 6, 2005) revealed both. In our opinion, there are far too many Americans content to permit talking heads on their amusement boxes to steer and mold their thoughts (a-muse-ment: a = without, muse = reasoning/thinking). Several callers passed up the chance to avail themselves of some time-honored reference books called 'dictionaries'. For those who have ears to hear and eyes to see, a blastocyst or blastula is a thin-walled structure in the early stage of development of a mammalian embryo. A dictionary also tells us that in humans, an embryo is the term used by scientists to describe the cellular growth from the moment of fertilization to the beginning of the third month. The Genetics and Public Policy Center tells us that at the first coupling of a sperm and egg the first cell of a new individual is formed (a zygote). MedicineNet's Webster's Medical Dictionary says that the unification of sperm and egg forms a zygote and that constitutes fertilization, and that new cell structure develops into an embryo following instructions encoded in its DNA. The Biology-Online dictionary similarly says the zygote develops into a new organism. (ed. note: the organism is already present in the code of life, the DNA - it continually develops from the moment of fertilization, and the DNA continues to repair the fully grown organism until death 80++ years later.) One of the guests on C-SPAN was Robert Klein from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Mr. Klein has missed too many opportunities to 'study to show himself approved'. When you listen to debates, do you observe any of the parties failing to supply documentation and references? I did this morning while listening to Mr. Klein. He was flat wrong most of the time, when he appeared on the surface to be reciting facts. Regardless of which side of the fence we stand, let us be honest and mature enough, and enlightened enough, to look for truth and to apprehend it for ourselves when it presents itself. And let us strive to avoid being depressed at the realization that some, if not all, of our fellow countrymen who refuse to study for themselves - are voters ! Heaven help us. Please ! |
